How do you DM someone on Twitter (X) who does not follow you?

How to DM someone on Twitter (X) who does not follow you: the three taps, the five cases where a stranger's DM gets through, and which tab it lands in.

To DM someone on X who does not follow you, open their profile, tap the message icon next to Follow, and send. Their DM setting decides whether it arrives. If their inbox is open, your DM lands in their message requests. If it is closed, X asks for their X Number instead. On the customer accounts we ran from July to October 2026, that was about 1 in 4 people.

How to send a DM on X

Sending takes three taps on the web or in the apps:

  1. Open their profile on x.com or in the app.
  2. Tap the message icon next to Follow. On x.com it is a speech bubble.
  3. Type your message and send it.

X may ask you to verify a phone number before your first DM to someone who does not follow you, so have one on the account. We walked these taps on x.com on 10 September 2026; the app screens may differ slightly.

Who can get a DM from a stranger?

Their setting decides, and X's help pages list five cases where a stranger's DM gets through:

  • Open to anyone. They allow message requests from Everyone.
  • Open to verified users. They allow Checkmark users, and you have a blue check.
  • An earlier chat. They sent you a DM before.
  • The same team. You are both in one Premium Business team.
  • Their X Number. You enter it, and they have it switched on.

If none of these apply, their inbox is closed to you. Following them will not open it unless they follow back. What "inbox closed" means covers the ways around it, from a reply on their posts to asking for an X Number.

Where your DM lands

A DM from a stranger waits in the person's message requests until they accept it. X then sorts it into a Priority tab or a Hidden tab, and the second one is easy to miss. You get no read receipt until they accept, and any photo or link preview stays hidden until then too.

That is why we send first messages as plain text with one short question and no link. If you worry about landing in the Hidden tab, how senders stay out of Hidden requests covers what you can control.

Writing to more than a few people

Once you write to a list, X's cap on first messages to strangers comes into play. A free account can send 7 a day and Premium 35, counted over a rolling 24 hours. The DM limit for every plan has the rest. X's rules add a limit of their own. They say "You may not send unsolicited Direct Messages in a bulk or automated manner", and that line covers any tool you use as well.

The list matters more than the volume. In our founder's own outreach in September 2026, people who had commented on "drop your startup link" posts replied with interest 26 times out of 854. Followers of big marketing accounts did so 5 times out of 1,804. Where to find X leads that reply breaks those numbers down.

If you send to a list every day, Xsender keeps each account inside its daily cap and skips people who cannot get a DM.

FAQ

Why is there no message button on their profile?

One possible cause is that their DMs are open only to people they follow, or only to verified users. The reverse also happens: X says the button can appear on a closed inbox, so a visible button does not prove you can send.

Can you DM someone who has blocked you?

No. X shows a notice on their profile when you are blocked, and your message will not send. A chat that worked before and then stopped is covered in why X says you can no longer send messages.

Does a blue check let you DM anyone?

No. A blue check opens inboxes set to verified users only, and it lifts your cap on first messages from 7 to 35 a day. An inbox open only to people they follow stays closed, check or not, as what X Premium changes for cold DMs explains.

Why did my DM to a stranger fail?

Their setting or your daily cap stops most first messages. Why a message is not sent on X matches each error on screen to its cause.
