When a DM on X will not send, the cause is almost always the other person's settings or your own daily limit. To tell which, send a reply in a chat you already have. If the reply goes, the problem is that one person. If it fails too, your account has hit a limit and needs a rest.
Which error is on your screen?
Most lines X shows point to one cause, so find yours in the left column. Lines marked "reported" come from users and other tool makers, not from X:
| What X shows | What it most likely means |
|---|---|
| "This person's inbox is closed", or a prompt for their X Number. | They only take DMs from people they follow. What a closed inbox means. |
| "You can no longer send messages to this person". | A chat that used to work has shut. Why an open chat shuts. |
| "You cannot send messages to this user". | A block, or an inbox open to verified users only. |
| "This request looks like it might be automated". | Error 226, most often the daily cap on Premium. Error 226, cap or flag. |
| A notice about your daily message request limit. | The cap on a free account, 7 first messages a day. |
| "This account is temporarily locked", or a phone prompt. | X wants a phone or puzzle check first. |
| "There was a problem loading your direct messaging key" (reported). | The key that unlocks Chat did not load. |
| "Not sent", "Message failed to send", or stuck on Sending (reported). | Any of the above. Run the reply test. |
One person, or every chat?
The reply test sorts a vague error into one of two piles. Send a short reply in a chat you already have, then try a new message to a second person.
If only the new person fails, the wall is on their side and nothing you change will move it. If the reply fails too, the problem sits with your account. The fixes point in opposite directions, so this is worth the minute: on their side you move on, and on yours you stop sending for a while.
When the problem is on their side
Most single failures come from the other person's DM setting. If they only take messages from people they follow, your first message cannot reach them. A follow back, an old chat or their X Number are the only ways in. On the 46 accounts we ran from 2 July to 5 October 2026, about 1 in 4 leads (23%) could not get a DM at all.
A block looks the same from your side. The difference is that X shows a notice on their profile when you are blocked. "You cannot send messages to this user" can also mean they only take requests from verified accounts. The settings that decide this are in how to DM someone who does not follow you.
When the problem is your account
If nothing sends, the usual cause is X's cap on first messages to strangers: 7 a day on a free account and 35 on Premium. The window rolls from your first send instead of resetting at midnight, and in our 21 day study of 30 accounts, to 1 September 2026 the next send went through 24.7 to 27 hours after a batch began. The DM limit for every X plan has the full table.
A lock clears once you log in on x.com and pass the phone or puzzle check. If the Chat key will not load, log out, log back in and enter your Chat PIN. Go slowly. X says that after 20 wrong tries, your encrypted chat history is locked for good.
X's help page also says that the same text or link sent to many people "may" pause your DMs for at least 30 minutes. Our logs do not show copies as the trigger: one campaign sent the same message 8,058 times, and what those accounts ran into most often was the daily cap.
Why sending it again rarely works
Resending to someone X has already refused almost never gets through. On 3 September 2026 we audited our founder's own workspace and found 662 sends in the past week to people X had refused before, most with closed inboxes. Only 11 went through, and each failed try took a sending slot that could have gone to someone new.
So send each person one message and move on. Xsender is built that way: it never retries a lead X refused, and before each send it checks that the person's inbox is still open.
FAQ
Am I blocked if my message will not send?
Not always. A closed DM setting or an unfollow stops your messages too. X shows a notice on the person's profile when you are blocked.
Why can I reply to old chats but not start new ones?
X's daily cap only counts first messages to people who do not follow you. Replies in an open chat do not count, so they keep working after the cap runs out.
My DM sent, so why is there no reply?
A first message to a stranger lands in their message requests, where X sorts it into a Priority tab or a Hidden tab. Why cold DMs end up in Hidden requests explains the sort.
